"When a school demands from you and insists on higher standards of behaviour, smartness, endurance, honesty, hard work and results, you can feel that such a school is worth belonging to and you can be proud of it."
- Derek Hyde-Lay, iconic Shawnigan coach and teacher

Shawnigan’s long-standing tradition in rugby embraces life’s lessons of hard work, commitment, team work, camaraderie and humbleness in both victory and defeat. As six-time Provincial Champions (1998, 2009-2013), our program supports our mission statement that emphasizes the “pursuit of personal excellence.” A very talented coaching staff made up of Provincial and National-level coaches provide challenging practices, game analysis, and opportunities to tour outside of North America. Each year we graduate players that go on to play Varsity rugby at universities in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.

The Shawnigan rugby experience begins in grade 8 and culminates at the Senior 1st XV level. In order for a student to progress to the top level they must be highly motivated and hard working. Complementing our program is a Human Performance course taken during the academic day that emphasizes strength training, flexibility, and nutritional education. Our facilities are second to none and offer Olympic weights and a well-equipped cardio room. We also offer skills during the off season for those players who are looking towards a competitive season in the Spring. While many of our top athletes are involved in other sports it allows many of those relatively new to the game to improve their overall fitness and skill development.

During the Fall Term, our grade 8 and 9 boys play rugby and compete for the School while our grade 10 boys, senior girls and senior boys compete in the Spring Term. The competition includes Independent Schools, the local Public School leagues, and exhibition games with top schools in the lower mainland. Tours from across Canada, the U.K., the U.S. and “Down Under”, often come for friendly games and the building of friendships. Our teams frequently tour to various parts of the world during Spring Break.

The senior girls and senior boys compete annually at the Provincial Championships, held in late May and early June, and consistently finish in the top two in the Province.
