Colombia showed why the are an upcoming force to be reckoned with as they pulled off the surprise double gold in men’s and women’s sevens at the Central American and Caribbean sports games in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Led by Howlers by Howlers Jose Manuel Diosa's 2 tries and a conversion along with Sebastian Meijia's 2 tries the Colombian men went undefeated in two days of competition, downing hosts Mexico in decisive fashion 41-0 in the final . Howler Alejo Venegas was also part of the winning team.

With Howlers Romaro and Claudia Bentacur on the squad the Colombian women took on all challengers as well, coming away with the gold by downing Venezuela 24-5.

The sevens competition, part of an over all combined games taking place in the coastal city, saw eight men’s teams in two pools and one six team women’s division battle it out over two days.

On the men’s side the teams stuck to the form sheet as both pool winners on day one one, Mexico and Colombia, were undefeated at 3-0 and both swept through the quarters and semis without much struggle. In the quarter-finals Mexico swept bast Bermuda 27-7, Venezuela by a 34-7 score in the semi before hitting the wall against Colombia, failing to score any points for the first time in six games.

Colombia had a similar story, blanking Costa Rica 31-0 before getting by Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-final 33-12.

Jose Manuel Diosa led his Colombian side in the final with two tries and a conversion for twelve points, while Jhon Urrutia and Sebastian Meijia both scored a pair of tries in the one sided gold medal win.

On the women’s side Colombia had only two tries scored on them all weekend en route to the gold medal match. But it was the try scoring prowess of Sharon Acevedo that caught the attention of fans, as the 21 year old blazed in four tries for twenty points, with Maria Lopera adding a pair of conversions.

Trinidad and Tobago finished third in the men’s competition, getting by Venezuela 26-24, while bronze on the women’s side went to hosts Mexico with a 26-0 win over Jamaica.

A number of the Caribbean based teams on both the men’s and women’s teams now move to the Federal district for a mid-week meeting of the North American Caribbean Association sevens championships.
